Best Foot Forward - PD Blog
By Laurice Shafer, 5/21/2015
Hat settled into place,Gloves smoothed overEach finger, my grandmotherGlances at the back of her legs--
Nylon seams run straight and true. She smiles into the mirror,Pride in her respectability shines back.No one in town will guessShe'd come from washingDirtied linen, soiled byIncontinent eldersHoused in her home. Sixty years later, I head out.No hat, gloves, or nylonsPlead respectability. My jeans, sandals, and ruffled hairSay, I'm free! No expectations bind me.And yet "Best Foot Forward: A Memoir."
I'm not immuneTo the ancestral Pride-gene.I wonder— how do I look to others? They are my mirror. Is my maskIn place? My best foot forward?I don't want to be caught less-than-perfect,My dirty, sinful self visible to all. Oh, Child, I am your mirrorLook at Me. In love I chose youFrom before the foundation of the earthTo be holy and without blame.I have made You,Accepted in the Belovéd.

Two Perspectives
By Laurice Shafer
Side by side,Two friends peered throughKnotholes in the fence.“Oh,” one fussed,Her curly blonde head shaking.“Look! That’s terrible!”She stamped her foot and fisted her hands.Suddenly, she noticedHer friend. He peered through His holeAnd grinned. Impatient, she tugged at him.“Don’t you see it?” His answer came,Reassuring, “I do indeed! They’ll make it.”He added, “Come, look.” She stepped into his space. The scene before her, the same … Yet different. In the scene's center, the turmoil remainedJust as she remembered it.But from this vantage point she could seeWhere the problem began … and how it ended.Glorious ending! Her fear and anxiety melted.Tension smoothed from her brow.“Oh, … I forgot Who … you are.”She continued to watch Through his knothole.“I like this view,” she murmured.“It’s yours,” He said … If you will let me
live it
with you.

Years of losingMyself. Dissolving ... but.For today. For this moment.Right now.I feel alive! Joy explodes,Filling my beingWith fireworks light. I dance in my heart and mind.I dance on my feet!I am moving!Brain circuits buzz and whir. I think,I create,I do.
Is this what it’s like, Lord,To be me?

An early winter drive included this amazingly beautiful cliff. A mile further, and the road was closed. On the way home, the cliff was vivid, bathed in golden sunlight.
